I tend to be a very level-headed person so I don’t startled easily and do not get creeped out very often. While playing Fallout 3, I discovered the small town/settlement called Andale. I knew something was wrong from the moment I started talking to the people living there though I couldn’t place my finger on it. How could they be so oblivious to what was currently happening out in the Wasteland and why would they still dress in normal pre-war casual wear? But when I broke into the Smith’s basement and saw evidence that they were cannibals, I immediately paused the game and refused to play, and left the room. Eventually I gained enough courage and went back, then I murdered all the adults (except for Old Man Harris) for scaring the daylights out of me. I never felt a twitch of guilt. They deserved it.

andrew jackson is literally ONE OF THE WORST PRESIDENTS I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF LEARNING ABOUT. i mean jfc. i know he had a bullet lodged in his chest from a fucking duel he probably started because he was insane and couldn’t keep his fucking hickory stick to himself and no one could get this bullet out so he had to live with it and it probably killed him. but it’s not like he died anytime soon after it happened UNFORTUNATELY. so, in typical antebellum-southern rage, he did what any other racist would do and made the lives of slaves and native americans much, much, much worse. because it was such a walk in the park before he came along with his secret fucking cabinets and blatant disregard for the law (and by “secret fucking cabinets”, i just mean “secret cabinets” these weren’t like weird cabinet meetings where a bunch of old white dudes got together and had missionary position sex because I DON’T NEED THAT IMAGE THANKS).

TO TOP IT ALL OFF: they couldn’t even escape his ass after he died. i have a theory that that parrot wasn’t so much “removed” as it was shot, killed, de-feathered and eaten. and sometimes i imagine that while they were delightfully snacking on his parrot - you know, grinning, drinking and humming songs about jackson’s fantastic demise - in the middle of the meal someone was like, “do you think this is what jackson would’ve tasted like if we killed him and ate him when we had the chance?” and everyone at the table would stop eating for a moment. not because john over there just made the world’s first casual-cannibal joke but because THEY WERE ALL THINKING IT TOO. and then other-john is all, “i bet he’d taste sweeter…like revenge,” and cue manic laughter from eight johns, two james’ and a thomas while martin van buren silently began scheming in the corner about how to scalp one of them and take their full head of hair because goddamn his bald spot was epic.

Our lives are about to get a whole lot twee-er as Moonrise Kingdom makes its way to American cinemas in select cities near you. (Sorry, Alabamian Wes Anderson fans!) It’s the first live-action film Anderson has made since 2007’s The Darjeeling Limited, and it’s quite good: fitting someplace between The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (more on that in a bit). Following a pair of pre-teen lovers as they flee from their constricting lives, it boasts an all-star cast (including regular Anderson players Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray, as well as Frances McDormand, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton, and Tilda Swinton) and excrutiatingly detailed production design. (Seriously, this flick looks like the Brooklyn Flea.) But who can forget Moonrise’s cinematic predescors—those movies that convinced us to enable this lanky manchild taken with flights of fancy and whimsy? Screenwriting Techniques

One of the most important/ground breaking things any teacher has ever told me is when a substitute explained that in the best screenplays, every scene (like in every movie) has a character that wants for something and at the close of the scene, they have succeeded or not. What surprised me about this piece of information was the every scene angle. The substitute explained that having a character strive for something in each scene, no matter how big or small, is the only way to ensure that every scene is vital and that the plot is constantly being moved.

My teacher used an example from Good Will Hunting, but I love looking at Nick Hornby’s script for An Education. The second scene (in the script) shows Jenny listening to music instead of studying. Her father interrupts and tells her:

“I don’t want to hear any French singing. French singing wasn’t on the syllabus, last time I looked.”

Jenny sighs. She turns the volume down and continues to listen.

The point of this scene is obvious: to show that Jenny is rebellious against her strict parents. The want is slightly less obvious but it’s there as well. Jenny wants to evade studying, she wants to listen to music, and ultimately she wants to engage in an act that’s against her father’s wishes.

So she listens to french music instead of studying. Her father catches her and attempts to stop her. She doesn’t stop and thus succeeds. It’s a tiny want but a want nonetheless and it adds to the overarching theme of An Education which is an adolescent’s reckless wish for freedom.

This technique is especially vital in writing fiction, where writing filler scenes is not only practically unavoidable but tempting (think long-winded writers ala Virginia Woolf).
